Restorative

I love to solve problems. Whereas some are dismayed when they encounter yet another breakdown, I can be energized by it. I enjoy the challenge of analyzing the symptoms, identifying what is wrong, and finding the solution. I enjoy bringing things back to life; it is a wonderful feeling to identify the undermining factor(s), eradicate them, and restore something to its true glory. Intuitively, I know that without my intervention, this thing—this machine, this technique, this person, this company—might have ceased to function. I fixed it, resuscitated it, rekindled its vitality.

Adaptability

I live in the moment. I don’t see the future as a fixed destination; instead, I see it as a place that I create out of the choices that I make right now; and so I discover my future one choice at a time. This doesn’t mean that I don’t have plans, I do; but this theme of Adaptability does enable me to respond willingly to the demands of the moment even if they pull me away from my plans. Unlike some, I don’t resent sudden requests or unforeseen detours, I expect them. They are inevitable. Indeed, on some level I actually look forward to them. I am, at heart, a very flexible person who can stay productive when the demands of work are pulling me in many different directions at once.

Competition

Competition is rooted in comparison. When I look at the world, I am instinctively aware of other people’s performance; their performance is the ultimate yardstick. No matter how hard I tried, no matter how worthy my intentions, if I reached my goal but did not outperform my peers, the achievement feels hollow. Like all competitors, I need other people. I need to compare. If I can compare, I can compete, and if I can compete, I can win. And when I win, there is no feeling quite like it. I like measurement because it facilitates comparisons, I like other competitors because they invigorate me, and I like contests because they must produce a winner. I particularly like contests where I know I have the inside track to be the winner. Although I am gracious to my fellow competitors and even stoic in defeat, I don’t compete for the fun of competing. I compete to win.

Consistency

Balance is important to me. I am keenly aware of the need to treat people the same, no matter what their station in life, so I do not want to see the scales tipped too far in any one person’s favor. In my view this leads to selfishness and individualism. It leads to a world where some people gain an unfair advantage because of their connections or their background or their greasing of the wheels. This is truly offensive to me. I see myself as a guardian against it. In direct contrast to this world of special favors, I believe that people function best in a consistent environment where the rules are clear and are applied to everyone equally. This is an environment where people know what is expected. It is predictable and evenhanded. It is fair. Here each person has an even chance to show his or her worth.
